Based on an ancient model. Pair of bronze sculptures with a dark patina. “Furietti’s Centaurs.” They are mounted on pink granite bases adorned with a molded plinth featuring a frieze of water leaves and a pearl frieze. 19th century. Height: 47 cm - Width: 36 cm - Depth: 14 cm Total height: 66 cm This pair of bronze sculptures is a smaller version of the Roman-era Furietti Centaurs in gray-black marble (bigio morato), now housed in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. They were discovered in 1736 by Cardinal and antiquarian Giuseppe Furietti (1685–1764). Numerous smaller versions were produced during the 18th and 19th centuries; they were often brought back, particularly during the Grand Tour. Italian foundries (Rome, Naples) and later French foundries produced them in various sizes, in bronze with a brown or black patina to mimic the dark hue of the original marble.
