Benjamin CONSTANT (Paris, 1845-1902) "Portrait présumé de Julie-Pauline-Marguerite Sipière" (1876-1935) - Canvas - 208 x 111.5 - Signed 'Benjamin. Constant /93' lower left. Numbered 149 on the frame. Old restorations, dents. Exhibition : Salon des Artistes Français, 1895, n° 149 : Portrait de Melle. MS... - Our model is most probably Julie-Pauline-Jeanne-Marguerite Sipière (1876-1935), daughter of Baron Sipière, whom Benjamin Constant painted a little later (in 1897, Salon, no. 11); she married Antoine du Bourg, Marquis de Bozas, in 1893, the year of our painting. 1893 was the year in which Constant exhibited the most works, in Paris (Cercle artistique et littéraire, Salon des artistes français, Société des aquarellistes, etc.), Chicago (Exposition Universelle), Narbonne (Exposition des Beaux-Arts), Constantine (Algeria), Madrid and Monte-Carlo, establishing the artist as one of the most important of his generation.
