Jean-Baptiste Marie PIERRE (1714-1789) - "Berger jouant de l - Lot 239
Jean-Baptiste Marie PIERRE (1714-1789) - "Berger jouant de la flûte" - Canvas - 78.5 x 126 - Signed lower right: CLA.G/1656. Gallery label "La grande galerie 214 Faubourg Saint-Honoré" and label attributing the painting to Claude Gelée. Old restorations. The format and the pose of the shepherd indicate that this is a door top. The painting belongs to two different hands; Pierre for the central figure, the tree trunk and the foliage, and the landscape on either side to another, perhaps later, painter. It is possible that this canvas was left unfinished, perhaps after the sale of Pierre's studio in August 1789 (without a catalog, but the after-death inventory mentions several sketched canvases, with no mention of subject). We would like to thank Mr. Nicolas Lesur, after direct examination of the work on July 2, 2024, for confirming its autograph nature, which he places in the 1740s.
