Micro-mosaic medallion panel in polychrome glass beads, depicting a Roman scene in a wooded landscape. It is framed in carved and gilded wood, decorated with gadroon friezes. monogrammed: E M . Northern Italy. Probably Rome. 18th century. H.30 L 36.5 cm
The technique of miniature mosaic was born in Rome's Vatican workshop in the 18th century. It features neoclassical themes depicting an animated landscape or antique scene. Mosaics are created using a rigorous distribution of tesserae applied to a support. They adorn a variety of precious objects that serve as gifts exchanged between high dignitaries. "At the end of the 18th century, micro-mosaics spread throughout Europe, thanks in particular to the Grand Tour undertaken by many collectors, artists and art lovers. In Paris, a mosaic workshop opened in 1797. Under the direction of Francesco Belloni (1772-1863), a master mosaicist trained in the Vatican Atelier, it became a Manufacture Royale in 1817.
