Seund Ja RHEE (1918-2009) - Lot 272
Seund Ja RHEE (1918-2009) Active mirror, 1962 Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. Titled, located Paris, signed and numbered 20F1143 on the back of the canvas. Stamped by the Musées de Cagnes-sur-Mer on the frame. 73 x 60 cm Seund Ja Rhee is the only Korean artist to have worked in France in the post-war period. Born in Jinju, she fled the Korean War and settled in Paris in 1953. There, she studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière with professors Brayer and Goetz. It was through contact with the non-figurative painting of the Parisian studios of the 1950s that she developed a meditative, gestural abstraction. In the 1960s, she developed an abstraction based on simple geometric figures, pictorially translating the Eastern philosophical principles of Yin and Yang. Galerie Cavalero exhibited her work in Cannes in the early sixties. She is also supported by the critic and writer Michel Butor, who has devoted many pages to her work, as well as holding exhibitions. In 1993, the artist built an "architect's" house in Tourrettes-sur-Loup, named "Rivière d'argent", which would become his new studio. Today, her work enjoys international recognition and is exhibited in numerous contemporary art museums.
